Wentworth's memories of golf in the 1940s noted
that "Several smaller boys were employed as 'shaggers,'
picking up balls hit by golfers practicing or taking lessons.
Some of the more athletic shaggers wore baseball gloves and
caught golf balls on the fly. They were paid 35 cents
for half an hour of ball chasing. Because the practice
range included a good portion of the first fairway, the shaggers
had their backs to the first tee and could get caught in the
crossfire."" from "Out of the Pasture",
